SXSW wrapup

What a truly amazing event. My first time, and I’ll definitely be a regular.

I can’t put into words the feeling of being surrounded by thousands of brilliant internet workers. Unmeasurable energy, creativity and wisdom.

The people.

I met some of the most interesting people ever. Internet famous, actual famous, developers, artists, designers, bloggers, producers, a rocket scientist, hula hoop girl, inventor, a caveman, leaders, hipsters, geeks, business-people and a cabbie on crack. All with one thing in common: a passion for everything interactive. (Except the cabbie - she had other passions.)

The city.

Austin. What a town. While we spent most of our time within a four block radius, I did get the opportunity to join a nice group run, and saw some of the extended neighborhood around the river. That, and an emergency drive to the Austin mall. The geography was unexpected - not as flat as the rest of Texas. Plenty of hills, and cool-looking trees. Austin has some interesting architecture - new and old.

The food was extra delicious. We enjoyed great BBQ, great cajun, and some tacos that may have rendered permanent damage to David and Rob’s digestive systems. Texas beer has magic qualities too.

The conference.

The single most connected conference that I’ve ever attended. Everyone always on their laptops, always on their iPhones, and sharing with the world. Connecting to friends across the world, and across the room.

A reporter that I met described it as an event largely ignored by the major media, yet more documented and communicated than any event in history.

This is a conference with a vibe and energy that won’t allow you to sleep.

The highlights:

For me, it was the people. One of the most diverse - yet unified crowds that I’ve every experienced. That, and of course, Rob’s spur-of-the-moment tattoo.
